Bath’s Romans loved their roses don’t you know?

Inspiration for Bath Roman Roses

No prizes for guessing that the scent of Bath was inspired by the Roman Religious spa Aquae Sulis (meaning Bath), built in in 44 AD, & the Roman love of roses (I’ll get back to that a bit later). If you’re going to build a town then you may as well choose a site where you can build a bathing house benefiting from hot springs at a temperature of 46 degrees right?

How many Red Roses symbolize an engagement?

I chose the Red Rose as the scent of Bath for it’s heady & alluring bouquet, visualising the red velvety petals.

Whilst we all recognise this flower as a symbol of love and passion, which is why the florists are kept so busy on Valentine’s day, there is also a symbolism with numbers. Check these out

  • A single red rose symbolizes LOVE
  • Two tied together symbolizes ENGAGEMENT
  • Twelve red roses symbolize GRATITUDE
  • Twenty- five red roses symbolize CONGRATULATIONS
  • Fifty red roses symbolize UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

Dunking rose petals in wine will stave off intoxication ………

Well I think the Romans got that wrong! They believed by doing that and hanging them in a garland around your neck would stave off any intoxication you might feel when drinking and subsequently revealing your secrets. My experience, just don’t drink the wine!

The Roman’s love of roses and bathing could be combined when the elite few had oils, infused with rose, massaged into their skin at the Roman Spa or for the very elite at their own home. The tradition has carried on ever since. I remember pulling the rose petals off my mum’s roses to make perfume when I was little.

Other uses include adorning statues of their gods with garlands of roses, I imagine as a symbol of love, and scattering them from the ceilings during banquets.

All the images of Red Roses you see on my website are taken from the Red Roses growing in Bath parks and countryside. Wouldn’t it be lovely to imagine the Roman’s walking amongst them.
